Connect your Pixel Watch or Fitbit to Run the Edge

Wear your watch, move, and let your miles count. Run the Edge can pull your steps and workouts from a Google Pixel Watch or a Fitbit, so you never have to enter them by hand.

It takes a one-time setup. Your watch sends its activity to the Google Health app, Google Health shares it with Apple Health on your iPhone, and Run the Edge reads it from there. Three short videos walk you through it, and every step is written out below each one.

Step 1

What you need

Check that you have these four things before you start. If you do, go on to Step 2.

Your checklist

  • Your physical watch. A Google Pixel Watch or a Fitbit.
  • The Google Health app on your phone.
  • The Apple Health app on your phone. It comes with your iPhone.
  • The latest version of Run the Edge, from the App Store.
Step 2 Video · 1:11

Connect Google Health to Apple Health

This lets Google Health write your watch activity into Apple Health, which is where Run the Edge reads it.

The steps, written out

  1. Make sure your Pixel Watch or Fitbit is connected to the Google Health app and syncing.
  2. Open Google Health. Tap your profile icon at the top right, then Partner apps.
  3. Select Apple Health, then tap Get started.
  4. Read and agree to the Google Health terms and conditions.
  5. The next screen explains how to sync with Apple Health. Tap Open app to go to Apple Health.
  6. In Apple Health, tap the Sharing tab, then Apps, then Google Health.
  7. Scroll down to Allow Google Health to write. Under Activity, turn on Steps, Walking + Running Distance and Workouts.
  8. Scroll to the bottom. If a button appears, such as Allow, Save or Done, tap it. Some iPhones don’t show a button. That’s fine.
  9. That’s it. Back in Google Health, Partner apps now lists Apple Health under Connected, marked “Synced just now.”

Connect Google Health in Run the Edge

Now tell the Run the Edge app to read your Google Health activity from Apple Health.

The steps, written out

  1. Open Run the Edge. Tap the Settings tab, then Device Sync.
  2. Scroll to the last rows and tap Connect on Google Health via Apple Health.
  3. Read the two steps on the screen. Choose your Sync Start Date, the date you want your miles to count from, then tap Sync Google Health.
  4. iOS asks to let RTE read your Health data. Turn on all four items (Cycling Distance, Swimming Distance, Walking + Running Distance and Workouts), then tap Continue. iOS only asks once. If you miss it, use the fix under “Miles not coming in?” below.
  5. Choose All Recorded Data and Future Data, then tap Done.
  6. You’ll see You’re connected! Your miles start syncing now and keep syncing whenever you open the app. Back in Device Sync, the row now says Disconnect.

If something doesn’t look right

The most common fix is below, with a short video, then a few quick answers.

Fix Video · 1:02

Miles not coming in?

Run the Edge may show a banner on the Home screen: “Google Health isn’t syncing.” That means it isn’t allowed to read Apple Health yet. Tap Fix access and follow this video.

The fix, written out

  1. On the Home screen, tap Fix access on the banner, then tap Open Apple Health. iOS only asks for Apple Health access once, so Run the Edge can’t show the permission screen again. You turn it on in Apple Health instead.
  2. In Apple Health, tap your profile picture in the top right.
  3. Under Privacy, tap Apps.
  4. Choose RTE.
  5. Tap Change Access, select all four items, then tap Turn On.
  6. Tap Continue at the bottom.
  7. Select All Recorded Data and Future Data, then tap Done. When you come back to Run the Edge, your Google Health miles start syncing again.

More quick answers

I fixed access, but still no miles

Check these two things:

  1. Open the Google Health app and make sure your watch is connected and syncing.
  2. In Google Health, tap your profile icon, then Partner apps. Apple Health should be listed under Connected. If it isn’t, repeat Step 2.
“Please disconnect Fitbit and Google Health before connecting…”

Fitbit, Google Health and Google Health via Apple Health all read the same watch data, so only one of them can be connected at a time. In Device Sync, disconnect the other one, then connect Google Health via Apple Health again.

The iOS Health access prompt didn’t appear

iOS shows that prompt only once per install, so Run the Edge can’t show it again. You can still change what Run the Edge may read at any time. Follow the fix above, starting from Apple Health.

I’m on an Android phone

This guide is for iPhone, because it relies on Apple Health. Android phones connect differently, so don’t follow the Apple Health steps above.
